The European Sustainable Real Estate Initiative (ESREI), launched by the Observatoire de l'Immobilier Durable (OID), is a research and networking program dedicated to accelerating ESG integration and sustainable practices in the European real estate sector
BGBC is pleased to be featured in a recent publication as part of the ESREI European Tour, an initiative of the European Sustainable Real Estate Initiative, launched by the Observatoire de l'Immobilier Durable.
The ESREI European Tour is not a physical journey, but a structured series of publications and expert interviews focused on the future of sustainable real estate across different European countries. Each country edition analyses how ESG criteria (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and key European regulations—such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)—are shaping national real estate markets and driving transformation in the built environment.
The tour covers several countries, including:
- Germany: focusing on a more pragmatic, reality-based ESG approach and the national carbon neutrality target for 2045
- Ireland: addressing climate change impacts on insurance markets and the need for biodiversity restoration
- Austria: highlighting renovation rates, circular economy strategies, and whole-life carbon approaches
- Belgium: exploring sustainability perspectives in close collaboration with the Belgian Green Building Council
As part of the Belgian edition, BGBC Managing Director Gilles Vanvolsem shares insights on the key dynamics shaping sustainable real estate in Belgium. The interview highlights regulatory milestones to monitor in 2026, the growing importance of voluntary initiatives, and the need for greater alignment in a market marked by regional differences.
A key focus of BGBC’s contribution is its mission to harmonise practices and improve clarity for stakeholders, helping accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable built environment.
The exchange reflects a shared ambition between BGBC and ESREI: to strengthen knowledge, foster dialogue, and support the integration of ESG principles across Europe’s real estate sector.
BGBC warmly thanks ESREI and OID for this initiative and for including Belgium in this important European dialogue on the future of sustainable real estate.
