On the former Henrad site in Herentals, Lidl’s new distribution center is rising as a model of sustainability and smart design. From circular construction and solar energy to heat reuse and efficient logistics, every detail boosts environmental impact and local economy. Covering 43,000 m² and creating 230 jobs, it proves that ambitious, collaborative projects can make cities greener and smarter. Discover how sustainability is not just a goal, but the way forward.

Welcome in Herentals, at a place that is in full development. Where the Henrad site used to be, a brand-new distribution center for Lidl is now rising. An ambitious development fully focused on sustainability.

The challenge

Sustainability is truly woven into everything here, from energy efficiency and circular construction to smart logistical integration within the urban environment.

The approach

The approach here is a wonderful example of collaboration between the different parties. With Willy Naessens, the architect, the city of Herentals, our clients and of course also Heylen Warehouses. We all work together to implement sustainability at every level.

We also choose sustainable materials, modular construction and the design of the buildings is flexible so that in the future it can always be easily adapted. A striking element is the heat network. It ensures that the residual heat from the industrial cooling at Lidl can be reused to heat the offices.

In addition, we are also doing everything necessary to obtain a BREEAM Outstanding certificate. That is the highest sustainability standard, thanks to, among other things, smart technologies such as solar panels, as we are installing 1 megawatt of them.

That corresponds to the electricity use of about 2,500 households. We also collect and reuse rainwater. Everything is thoughtfully designed, even the logistics. The trucks won’t pass through residential streets, but are given direct access via the industrial estate to minimize inconvenience for local residents.

The result

Thanks to this project, the former vacant industrial Henrad site has been transformed into a vibrant sustainable zone.

The new distribution center covers 43,000 square meters, has 110 loading docks and creates 230 new jobs. This ensures that it provides a real boost to the local economy and sustainable growth.

Our lesson

My advice to others? Think big about sustainability, but at the same time work closely with the other construction partners and local authorities. Projects like this show that it’s possible. Renewable energy, circular construction and smart logistics not only make buildings greener, but also strengthen the region and the economy. We must continue improving our buildings.

Sustainability is not a trend, it is simply the way forward.
