Making smart electrification tangible
Inspired by WorldGBC’s global Electrify Now campaign, BGBC launches Electrifying Belgian Buildings to showcase Belgian projects demonstrating how smart electrification can support a more competitive, resilient and low-carbon built environment.
Through the following case studies, we explore how buildings can move from passive energy consumers to active participants in the energy system.
To make this transition tangible, we use the Smart Electrification Framework, rooted in European energy policy and structured around four sequential pillars:
1. Efficiency First - Reduce energy demand through renovation, insulation and efficient systems.
2. Smart Electrification - Phase out fossil fuels through efficient electric solutions such as heat pumps and EV charging.
3. Renewable Energy - Integrate renewable electricity, particularly solar PV.
4. Grid Readiness - Enable buildings to interact with the grid through smart energy management, storage and demand flexibility.
Together, these four pillars show how Efficiency First + Electrification + Renewables + Grid Readiness can turn buildings into more efficient, resilient and flexible assets.
We are bringing together inspiring Belgian examples to demonstrate what smart electrification looks like in practice.
